Whilst we are well versed and qualified in core Microsoft and Oracle skills we also actively seek out emerging, innovative technologies of relevance and quality to develop around and partner with.

 
 
 
Alan M Carroll  Managing Director
 
 

Alan
Alan founded Ultris in 2002 and has worked as Managing Director since then. In addition to his work with Ultris Alan is the Non Executive Director at Ideagen plc, a fast growing AIM listed software company operating in the governance, risk and compliance market. Prior to this Alan spent 24 years in the Army. After being sponsored at University, he served at fast track promotion level throughout his Army career, leaving in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1994 having gained an MSc in Design of Information Systems qualification from Cranfield Institute of Technology. He has significant experience of working and developing information system strategies and in system procurement.

On leaving the Army Alan spent 18 months working for Unisys and was promoted to Programme Sales Manager within 5 months after securing Unisys’s largest ever European PC/peripherals sale (total value in excess of £20M). Alan led a team in securing £60M of contracts within a 15 month timeframe in major European Journal competitions against EDS, IBM, Digital and ICL. He was then promoted to the senior management team and charged with strategic management of major clients (the first ever appointment made by Unisys outside of the finance sector) working directly to the head of European operations.

Alan was then recruited into Informix Software where he worked for 18 months focused on developing a team selling into the UK and European Public Sector markets, before leaving to set up his first company Enterprise Systems Solutions (ESS).

Mike Payne  Technical Director
 
 

Mike
Since graduating top of his year in 2007, Mike has gained a wide range of experience as a lead software developer and technical consultant on all manner of projects for a variety of customers spanning commercial, government and military organizations. In his capacity as Technical Director at Ultris, Mike looks to identify, validate and build capability in the new, innovative, business benefit driven technology companies Ultris partner with. Mike also keeps himself up to date and qualified in the platform infrastructure applications such as Microsoft to ensure we have the necessary understanding of the technical context of the environment our end clients in government are using.

Mike's technical expertise includes:
• Standard programming languages such as C#, C++, VB and Java for client, client/server, service and web programming
• SQL Database development around MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Ingres and others
• Microsoft SharePoint design and development of entire sites, workflows, web parts, and event handlers
• XML Database Development using XML, XQuery, XSL, and MarkLogic Server
• Integration with existing software packages (for example with CMSs), including the software DocLink for linking documents with records in Sage 50 Accounts
• Computer and internet security
• Web design in Photoshop, Expression, Fireworks, and other similar packages
• Web development involving HTML, PHP, MySQL, ASP, ASP.NET, JavaScript, jQuery, and AJAX

Mike regularly gains new professional qualifications in order to ensure he is meeting the most up to date standards and best practices in leading software development and implementation projects.

Dan Pearce  Senior Developer
 
 

Dan
Dan has extensive Oracle database and ERP software experience and knowledge of the associated Business Intelligence tools, coupled with advanced PL/SQL, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server expertise. He is a highly skilled Data Analyst. As a Systems Architect, Dan is also Microsoft certified in the installation, configuration, deployment and management of SharePoint 2013.

With web development experience including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, XML, AJAX, JSON, RESTful web services, Apache Tomcat and Adobe Creative Suite, Dan is adept at implementing web solutions and systems. This includes validating architectures and producing development plans for various projects. Additionally, Dan has ASP.NET web service development experience, instrumental in producing our Aspect Business Intelligence software. Dan has also developed and tested C# and Java applications, as well as providing technical support, producing documentation and presenting training courses.

Adept at business IT requirements analysis, Dan has an understanding of what is technically required to achieve corporate goals with an organisation. With extensive government experience at both a UK and European level, Dan is highly aware of the technical requirements and procedures involved in such working environments. Additionally, Dan has worked in the fields of forensic computing, financial data analysis and audio analysis and has a sound knowledge of computer hardware and system requirements.

Dan has a sound technical understanding of Basis Technology natural language processing and comprehension tools, including experience around implementation, adaptation and application to use cases. This encompasses skills in search and database technologies such as Apache Lucene, Elasticsearch and MongoDB. This experience combined with an interest and proficiency in multiple natural languages gives Dan a solid foundation in this field.

Andy Gray  Senior Information Assurance Architect
 
 

Andrew’s career in the IT industry has spanned a number of different roles over the last 20 years. Starting with software engineering and then moving into systems and business analysis through system and enterprise architecture. This has led through to a logical progression to Andrew’s current role as a senior information assurance architect.

Andrew has worked for a number of public and private sector organisations applying his experience in information assurance underpinned by information risk management. This has ensured that the designs and security architectures that Andrew has been responsible for building meet the client organisations’ information risk mitigation requirements. Clients he has been involved with range from smaller boutique specialist security focussed clients, though to major defence contractors and confidential government clients. Andrew is particularly experienced in complex information domains where varying levels of access to multiple classified sources of information apply.

Chris Hilton  Senior Information Architect
 
 

Chris has over 15 years experience in information architecture development and support of complex systems design for major public sector clients. In recent times, his focus has shifted to also take in the formulation of information management strategy and change management for large government departments.

Chris' experience developing requirements for major information systems in the public sector has enabled him to look at information management from a truly strategic and holistic perspective. He recently wrote an information management strategy for a major UK government department with a highly complex information portfolio, relying on an assessment that took in emerging and established technologies, their relationship to the wider business aims of the organisation aligned with a deep understanding of the department's information life-cycle.

Not afraid to get his hands dirty, Chris is always looking to develop his understanding and skills, whether identifying new and useful ways of applying and extending information architecture-based modelling approaches (describing information types; building taxonomies); using soft systems thinking to structure complex problems; or looking to see how an organisation's information management policies and governance regime can be improved.

Jenni McCartney  Director Special Projects
 
 

Jenni
Jenni has had a successful sales career with Digital Equipment Corporation, Logica UK Ltd and Oracle Corporation managing secure government accounts for over 20 years. Jenni closed large contracts with all the agencies she managed in all 3 companies, concluding with contracts for Oracle to provide Database, Middleware and Business Applications to all her customers.

Throughout her career Jenni has been responsible for developing customer relationships at a senior management level, and led multi-disciplinary teams to sell and deliver solutions to the customer base. She developed and managed multinational interactions to ensure that solutions met security requirements in the UK.

Jenni left Oracle in 2010 so that she could give more time to her activities in the Voluntary Sector. She has just taken over as Chair of Samaritans for UK and the ROI. She chairs the Board of Trustees and is closely involved in the ongoing strategic development of the organisation. Jenni is passionate about Samaritans, and has been a volunteer for nearly 30 years. The organisation has more than 21,000 volunteers who belong to 201 branches throughout the UK and Ireland. They are there round the clock, every day of the year, for people to talk to about whatever is getting to them. In 2013 they took more than 5 million calls.

Jenni is working with Ultris to continue her relationship with her long term customers by identifying potential solutions that will offer the secure community an advantage in meeting their challenging goals.
